A recurring form in his work is the butterfly, an insect of great cultural and spiritual significance in China, where it is believed to symbolize good luck and blessings. Over the years, Chan has created numerous iridescent butterflies using materials such as anodised titanium set with gemstones, a combination that creates a visually mesmerising effect. \r\n\r\nThis brooch was made to commemorate Chan’s creative journey which began in 1973. The body, central to the piece, is composed of five rubellites of very fine quality. Pink rubies and yellow diamonds, micro-set in a titanium structure, populate a greater part of the wings. The white diamonds on the wings, form the trace of a stylised number five, marking Chan’s 50th year of making. The word \"fú - 福\" which translates to good fortune in Mandarin, is hidden on the lower segment of each wing. \r\n\r\nWallace Chan (born Fuzhou, China 1956) began his career as a stone carving apprentice at the age of 16. Over the last 50 years, he has been recognised for his stone carving, sculptural jewellery and most recently his large-scale sculptural installations made from titanium. While Chan remains inspired by masters and techniques of the past, he continues to play an important role in the technological advancement of newly invented materials and techniques. \r\n","physicalDescription":"The butterfly's wings combine textured and diamond-set titanium in iridescent hues of green, pale blue and purple with swirls of pave set rubies and diamonds. The tips of the wings point upwards as if the butterfly is in flight. Its body is composed of five angled rubellites, open-set in diamond-encrusted settings. The underside of the butterfly is formed of a second layer of openwork titanium swirls, through which the gemstones of the upper wings can be seen. The double pin on the reverse decends from a titanium ribbon set with tiny rubies and diamonds; two titanium levers secure the points. \n\r\n\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Wallace Chan","id":"AUTH397279"},"association":{"text":"Designed by","id":"x40048"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"titanium","id":"AAT11033"},{"text":"diamond","id":"AAT11084"},{"text":"ruby","id":"AAT11082"},{"text":"tourmaline","id":"AAT11163"}],"techniques":[{"text":"stone-setting","id":"x34787"},{"text":"hand carving","id":"x34992"},{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"lapidary","id":"AAT53937"},{"text":"carving","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Textured and coloured titanium set with rubellites, rubies, white and yellow diamonds (the central rubellite weighs 3.26 carats, the others together weigh 7.94 carats; 164 white diamonds totalling 2 carats; 281 yellow diamonds weighing 2.93 carats; 646 rubies totalling 23.07 carats).\r\n","categories":[{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Animals and Wildlife","id":"THES250852"},{"text":"Couture","id":"THES280830"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"},{"text":"Gemstones","id":"THES270329"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2024NW4504","2024NW4505","2024NW4506","2024NW4503"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"91","id":"THES49703"},"free":"","case":"53","shelf":"C","box":"1"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"brooch","id":"THES287566"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Hong Kong","id":"x30049"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2022","earliest":"2022-01-01","latest":"2022-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":"The Certificate of Origin signed by Wallace Chan gives the piece's number as 8517-1, and is dated 16/01/2024."}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by CHAN Sai Ying, Wallace","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"130","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"13/08/2024","earliest":"2024-08-13","latest":"2024-08-13"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"80","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"13/08/2024","earliest":"2024-08-13","latest":"2024-08-13"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"43","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed 'Wallace Chan' on the underside of the right wing.\r\n\r\nThe underside of the left wing is inscribed with Rb.5 — 11.20\r\nTi Wp 2022","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"Rubellite 5 pieces 11.20tcw, Titanium, The Wallace Chan Porcelain, 2022","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""},{"content":"Concealed within the lines of diamonds can be seen the number '5' on both upper wings.
