He wrote about the experience of sitting for Freud in 'Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud' (2010). He recorded in an article published in Apollo (August, 2005) that \"The etching started with a chalk drawing that Lucian carefully rubbed out at the end of the first sitting. It reappeared next time as an almost Cubist version of my features, with an oblong block of hair sticking out of the side of my head. And with that Lucian was pleased - 'I think I've accidentally done a good drawing.' Then he sharpened his etching needle and started scratching.\"\r\n\r\nBefore the plate was sent to be bitten it fell off the easel, resulting in a scratch, lower left in the image.
