Her rigorous research-based work explores real events, embracing complex and innovative visual strategies that utilise both traditional documentation techniques with more contemporary and conceptual forms of representation. Barnard connects her interests in aesthetics and truth in photography with issues concerning the current political climate, in particular global capitalism and the growing relationship between the military, digital technologies, and the psychological implication of conflict.\r\n\r\nIn Barnard’s project Hyenas of the Battlefield, Machines in the Garden the artist takes a critical view of the ‘holy trinity’ – the alliance between global armed forces and the entertainment industry, and where they coalesce in contemporary violence and modern warfare. Collating seemingly disparate locations and unrelated subjects, the work highlights the increasing reliance of digital technologies in today’s ‘forever wars’, emphasising the screen as a silent but dangerous tool in both the training and delivery of remote and anonymous conflict strategies. \n\nThis photograph depicts a set designed to simulate military environments. It is located at 'Flatworld' a military funded research and development project, based at the Institute of Creative Technologies (ICT) in Los Angeles, the main research centre for training soldiers in enhanced digital warfare and dealing with its psychological trauma.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Lisa Barnard","id":"AUTH390320"},"association":{"text":"photographer","id":"x43821"},"note":"Barnard is an Associate Professor in Photography and runs the MA in Documentary Photography at The University of South Wales.
