Influential musician Keith Emerson (1944-2016), lead member of The Nice and the supergroup Emerson Lake and Palmer experimented with this tone-wheel organ, manipulating its metal sliders paving the way for the development of electronic synthesisers. Emerson was a highly regarded Hammond organist and synthesiser pioneer who created a unique musical sound that fused classical and non-classical genres. He was often described as the ‘Hendrix of the Hammond Organ’ for his theatrical stage performances centred around the instrument. This instrument has a rich performance history and demonstrates the sonic evolution of progressive rock and the important relationship of music and technology. It shows the transition from the electric keyboard to the modern synthesiser. Keyboards such as this became popular with other experimental British musicians in the 1970s.
