It took his thousands of experiments over several years to perfect the material, which was versatile and could be coloured, cut and polished to great effect on his products. It could be coloured with a range of mineral oxide stains. Ornamenting, also known as sprigging, is the process of applying small reliefs to a ceramic body. The relief is pressed onto a moistened ceramic surface – a vase or plaque for example - then fired. The design of the relief decoration on this set comes from a series known as 'Domestic Employment' and is generally attributed to Lady Templetown (1747-1823), an amateur artist who supplied designs on 'cut Indian paper'. Wedgwood reproduced 14 reliefs after her designs, acknowledging in the 1787 catalogue of ornamental wares her 'exquisite taste' and 'charming groups', which adapted well to jasperware relief.","physicalDescription":"Teapot of solid blue Jasperware, with dimpled surface and applied white reliefs of a female figure and children, and a finial of a child on the cover, spout has moulded decoration of foliage","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Upton, Elizabeth","id":"A8908"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Jasperware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied relief","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NR9542"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA22","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"WDG1","id":"THES264736"},"free":"","case":"CA22","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"teapots","id":"AAT43022"}],[{"text":"covers","id":"AAT197210"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1787","earliest":"1782-01-01","latest":"1791-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
