Josiah I took a rigourous approach to developing his jasperware and after conducting thousands of trials he successfully achieved the perfect white stoneware body which could be coloured through the addition of metal oxides and decorated with bas-reliefs. In his 1779 Catalogue of Ornamental Wares, Wedgwood markets jasperware cameos as suitable for rings, buttons and bracelets, or inlaying into furniture like cabinets and bookcases. This ivory patch box is inset with an oval blue jasper cameo of classical figures bordered with cut steel decoration. Patch boxes were small boxes carved from ivory used to contain 'patches' that were applied to the skin to hide blemishes in the 18th century.","physicalDescription":"Long flat oval ivory box with metal hinge and metal closing mechanism.
