The type of ware was suggested by Wedgwood’s business partner Thomas Bentley and made against Wedgwood’s inclination, as he was conscious of the inevitable comparison with the traditional redwares. He was reluctant to develop it, unsatisfied with the result, made very little use of it and never listed it in his catalogues. Lustre ware is a decorative technique where a thin film of metal has been deposited on the surface of a glaze, using and oxide or sulphide of the metal fired in a reducing kiln. Wedgwood has used three different lustre application techniques since 1759; ‘reduction fired lustre’, ‘metallised lustre’ and ‘liquid lustre’.  ‘Metallised lustre’ has been used on this bowl and saucer. This involves suspending an acid solution of gold or platinum in an oily resin and applying it over the fired glaze. A further firing is then used to reduce the metal compounds within the resin to a thin film.  This method could produce steel, silver, gold and variegated finishes.
