They were used for burning cassolette perfumes (powered willow wood charcoal mixed with fragrant oils and gum Arabic in the form of cone shaped pastilles). Using the burner would counteract the smells of stuffy rooms and inadequate drains. The 'Dolphin Tripod' design was first produced as an oil lamp, then adapted as a pastille burner around 1804. It is made from Black Basalt.  Made using the local black-firing clay known as ‘Carr’, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730 - 1795) named this ‘refined’ clay body as ‘black basalt’ in reference to the hard stone it imitated.
