Wedgwood's ceramic bodies were suited to a wide variety of practical uses in the kitchen. Besides decorative pieces for the dining room, meat carriers, stacking bowls – available in octagonal, diamond, circular and scalloped shapes – pudding moulds, bin labels, weights and ceramic inserts for saucepans were manufactured at this time. This dish is made of caneware. Wedgwood developed Caneware in the 1770s using mainly local Staffordshire clays. At this time, bamboo designs were fashionable and this clay was suited to them. Wedgwood carried out many trials to get the colour right, so it wasn’t until 1787 that caneware appeared in Wedgwood’s Catalogue of Ornamental Wares.","physicalDescription":"Game pie dish and cover, caneware and metal with applied relief decoration, three parts; oval shape, outer dish with glazed undecorated interior, exterior unglazed with applied reliefs of dead game, intertwined with a grape vine relief; cover unglazed, exterior with rabbit-shaped finial and applied relief decoration of dead game, two perforations; metal inner dish undecorated.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ceramic","id":"AAT235507"},{"text":"metal","id":"AAT10900"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"},{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Metal and Caneware with applied reliefs","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NY1381","2024NY1382"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA35","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA35","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA35","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dishes","id":"AAT42973"}],[{"text":"insert","id":"AAT123227"}],[{"text":"covers","id":"AAT197210"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1869","earliest":"1864-01-01","latest":"1873-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
