The collection featured limited editions of figures, plates and plaques in jasperware and black basalt. In Ancient Egypt, a canopic vase was intended to hold the internal organs, or viscera, of the deceased. \r\n\r\nWedgwood was an early pioneer in the production of ceramic ‘Egyptian’ wares. Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95) referenced several archaeological publications for both the design and decoration of these ornamental wares, and a list of 'Books belonging to W & B the 10th August 1770' includes a mention of Bernard de Montfaucon’s (1655–1741) 'L’Antiquité Expliquée'. Montfaucon’s 15-volume work was published in 1719, and was a catalogue of ancient Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman artefacts, sculptures, and art.\r\n\r\nThis 1978 canopic vase was reproduced from an 18th century Wedgwood model.
