He spent the majority of his career in Venice, producing figurative works in bronze, terracotta and gesso plaster, as well as teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts. Vio's artistic career was intermittently disrupted by a combined 12 years of military service, which made a significant impression on his later style and works. Vio regularly exhibited in Venice and received numerous high-profile national commissions and awards, including admission to the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. His sculptural abilities received international recognition in 1970, when he was commissioned to create a copy in marble of Antonio Canova's George Washington for the North Carolina State Capitol. \n\nThis bozzetto made in bronze functioned as an early model for Vio's monument to the Italian composer Umberto Giordano in Foggia (completed 1961). Vio received this commission in 1956 after winning a National Competition. His innovative winning entry included a plaster bozzetto for the composer's famous opera, Mese Mariano. Vio subsequently cast the bozzetto in bronze, and it reamined in the family's possession until it was gifted to the V&A in 2023.\n\r\nVio produced this initial model and the subsequent components of the monument in his studio in Venice - Sestiere of Dorsoduro - which was kindly made available to the artist by the Sammartini family and was located in the walled garden of their palazzo on the Grand Canal. The place of production for this object later became the studio of the female painter and sculptor Marta Sammartini (1900-1954), with whom Vio collaborated. \r\n","physicalDescription":"A group in bronze, comprised of two female figures and a child, displayed on a wooden base.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Vio, Romano","id":"AUTH398483"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2024NU2683","2024NU2684","2024NU2685"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES396164"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bozzetto","id":"AAT47838"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Venice","id":"x29237"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1956-1957","earliest":"1956-01-01","latest":"1957-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Francesco Vio","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bronze bozzetto for Mese Mariano, made 1956-7","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Pouchard, Ennio and Elsa Dezuanni.
