For this vase, a cream-colour clay was dipped in a celadon-coloured slip and then turned on an engine-turning lathe to reveal the colour underneath. Most of his vase shapes were thrown on the wheel and turned on the lathe, in the traditional manner of the potter, giving them the solid, simplified appearance that was so popular in the mid-20th century. \n\nKeith Murray was an architect by profession and in 1936, Wedgwood commissioned Murray to design a new, electricity-fired factory for the company. Murray's cutting-edge architectural designs were reflected in the shapes of his products developed for Wedgwood.","physicalDescription":"Vase, glazed earthenware with green slip and engine-turned decoration; cylindrical shape, interior with plain cream decoration, exterior decorated with green slip, engine-turned bands applied to exterior in five groups, in the form of concentric circles which expose the cream colour body under the green slip decoration.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Murray, Keith","id":"A818"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"},{"text":"slip","id":"AAT10459"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazing","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"engine turning","id":"AAT233401"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Glazed earthenware with slip and engine-turning","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NV4470"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1950","earliest":"1945-01-01","latest":"1954-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
