Louis Solon, of Mintons pottery, introduced pâte-sur-pâte to Stoke-on-Trent after working at Sèvres. Produced about 1880, the banjo vase references the popularity of Japanese art and design that spread across western Europe following the opening of Japan to international trade in the mid-nineteenth century. This vase is one of a pair and was likely painted by Frederick Rhead, an artist at Wedgwood and himself a pupil of Solon. Joining Thomas Allen’s design studio in 1878, Rhead’s work was shown at the international exhibition in Paris that same year.","physicalDescription":"Vase, glazed parian ware with white pâte-sur-pâte and gilding; 'banjo' shape vase with two blue handles either side in the form of chain links, both sides of brown body decorated with white pâte-sur-pâte depicting birds, plants and flowers, one side with butterflies with gilded outlines; gilded bands and patterns to rim, body and foot of vase.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rhead, Frederick","id":"A4290"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"parian","id":"AAT219039"}],"techniques":[{"text":"pâte-sur-pâte","id":"AAT179400"},{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Parian ware with pâte-sur-pâte and gilding","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2025PC5461","2024NV8857","2024NV8858"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1875","earliest":"1870-01-01","latest":"1879-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
