The image raises questions about female agency in photography: is the model truly taking a picture? Collier’s cool appropriation interrogates the agency of women photographers as expressed by commercial advertising. \r\n\r\nAnne Collier is a New York-based American visual artist. Her photography combines the reproduction of found objects with an exacting formal language to critique the distribution of power and desire in advertising and other forms of commercial photography. Collier reconfigures a range of material in her work, including posters, record sleeves, magazine spreads, technical manuals, and books of various kinds. Her subjects include ocean sunsets, eyes, stars smoking or crying, and jigsaws of paintings by famous artists. In a long-running series of photographs, she has represented women with cameras, either found in advertisements or vernacular photographs, including self-portraits by herself and others. These are presented as slide shows or enlarged as C-prints on a gallery wall. The work explores why images are constructed in the first place, relentlessly exposing the objectification of the (usually) female subject in commercial print culture, as well as the agency of women behind the camera.\n\n\n\n\n","physicalDescription":"Photograph of a woman wearing a bucket hat, holding a Pentax camera to her eye.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Anne Collier","id":"AUTH398423"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"c-type","id":"x35645"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"C-type print on photographic paper","categories":[{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"},{"text":"Photographic Studies","id":"THES283122"}],"styles":[{"text":"Post-Modern","id":"AAT22208"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2024NU7919"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"101","id":"THES49933"},"free":"","case":"WE","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"Photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":"Anne Collier is a New York-based artist."}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2013","earliest":"2013-01-01","latest":"2013-12-31"},"association":{"text":"photographed","id":"x30151"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchase funded by the Photographs Acquisition Group","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"93.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Unframed ","date":{"text":"08/12/2023","earliest":"2023-12-08","latest":"2023-12-08"},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"128.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Unframed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"95.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"Framed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"128.6","unit":"cm","qualifier":"framed","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This object came to the museum as part of the Photographs Acqusition Group via The Modern Institute, Glasgow.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograh by Anne Collier, 'La femme, la photo et Pentax', from the series ‘Women with Cameras’, 2013, C-type print.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.444-2024"],"accessionNumberNum":"444","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2024,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-13","recordCreationDate":"2023-11-24","availableToBook":false}}
