It is set in medieval England and tells the story of the famous protagonists Richard the Lionheart, King John, Robin Hood, and the wonderful love story between the knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe and his beloved Lady Rowena.\r\nThe novel has been credited for the increasing interest in Romance and Medievalism in Victorian England.\r\nThomas Allen designed his 'Ivanhoe' pattern for a range of tableware around 1881. The pattern was also used for a series of twelve tiles. The series continued to appear on tableware until the early twentieth century.\r\n\r\nThe story of Ivanhoe is set in twelfth century England. The Norman Conquest of 1066 had replaced the Saxon ruling class with Norman, i.e. French nobles.\r\nKing Richard I (also known as Richard the Lionhearted) is being held for ransom by Leopold V, Duke of Austria. In his absence, Richard's younger brother Prince John has allied with Philip II, King of France. Prince John is trying to keep Richard I out of England for as long as he can.
