Dehua was the second largest producer of ceramics, including export ware, after Jingdezhen. \r\n\r\nMoulded and finished by hand, these figures were usually placed on household altars and worshipped as devotional images in China. During the17th century they became popular in Europe, where the body and colour of the Dehua ware, also known as 'blanc de Chine', were much admired. The figures were placed on tables and cabinets in the residences of aristocrats and wealthy people, or exhibited in the so-called 'porcelain rooms', where walls and niches were completely filled with large quantities of ceramics. One of the most important European collections of this type belonged to Augustus the Strong of Saxony (d. 1733), who owned over twenty thousand pieces.","physicalDescription":"Porcelain figure of Guanyin with clear glaze, seated on a rock work; a child with folded hands standing next to her.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"porcelain","id":"AAT10662"},{"text":"clear glaze","id":"AAT15102"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"},{"text":"moulded","id":"x30076"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Porcelain with clear glaze","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Porcelain","id":"THES48907"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"},{"text":"Buddhism","id":"THES48984"}],"styles":[{"text":"Ming","id":"AAT18438"},{"text":"Qing","id":"AAT18478"},{"text":"Blanc de Chine","id":"x43566"},{"text":"Dehua","id":"x44583"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2008BR9301","2008BR9223"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"8","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Figure of Guanyin","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Dehua","id":"x32616"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1620-1700","earliest":"1620-01-01","latest":"1700-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"23.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from Siegfried Bing (Paris), accessioned in 1875.
