It is an example of tatreez - elaborate hand-embroidery on clothing and accessories - a practice and craft which was characterised by remarkable complexity and regional diversity across Palestine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.\r\n\r\nThe dress resembles those known as 'widow's dresses', characterised by the dense blue embroidery on the skirt. Bedouin women embroidered exclusively with blue thread on their skirts in times of mourning, an example of the ways in which the changing lives and circumstances of women was 'written' into their clothing. Upon remarriage, women would re-introduce red thread into their embroidery. The chest panel is embroidered more colourfully, with motifs typical of Bedouin patterns.
