The faces are sometimes cartoonish, animalistic, screaming. This type appears in conjunction with other threatening angry, “urban terrorist” types that mark Steinberg’s altered perception of the city beginning in the late 1960s and continuing through the remaining\r\nthirty years of his life; see https://saulsteinbergfoundation.org/essay/urban-terrorists/\r\n\"Kilipir\" means \"bargain\" in Romanian. But it is properly spelled “chilipir.” Steinberg sometimes wrote words phonetically; in Romanian, a “chi” is pronounced with a hard c, hence his switch to k, so that the first three letters aren’t pronounced like the chi in “children.” In the 1970s, he made a mock box for a box of colored crayons (\"Creionu\r\nColorerscu\") made by the \"Fabrica Kilipiru,\" the \"Bargain Factory.\" The work is in a private\r\ncollection.
