Beginning around 1965, Steinberg added the stencil style to his repertoire: drawings or parts of drawings made from actual stencils or drawn in emulation of stencils; the latter engendering a style in which components, of figures or objects, are divided into parts, with empty space between them, as if stenciled. Sometimes stencils served merely as background decorative elements, as here, sometimes as a means of constructing figures or objects.
