In 1777, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-95) developed a new method of colouring jasperware, whereby a layer is applied to the surface of the white jasper body using coloured slip. This is opposed to a ‘solid' jasper body where the same colour permeates throughout the entire ceramic medium. \r\n\r\nPlaques or tablets were used principally as wall decoration, for chimneypieces and furniture. Some plaques were made with an integral frame, others were subsequently framed in metal, often with ware acquired from Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and other Birmingham manufacturers.   \r\n\r\nThe relief figures were designed by Lady Elizabeth Templetown (1746-1823), an amateur artist who supplied designs on 'cut Indian paper'. Wedgwood reproduced 14 reliefs after her designs, acknowledging in the 1787 catalogue of ornamental wares her 'exquisite taste' and 'charming groups', which adapted well to jasperware relief.
