The Virgin Mary is shown with clasped hands, seated on the left of Christ and looking towards him as he crowns her. The figures are coloured, colour that was added as post-medieval invention in the first half of the nineteenth century. \r\nIt is likely that this relief was set into a smaller portable altar in the form of a triptych or tablernacle. This subject was especially popular in Christian art between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, in both monumental and small-scale formats.","physicalDescription":"The Virgin and Christ sit on a backless throne with plain mouldings visible at the top on the left side. Christ, wearing a low crown and a full mantle over a long belted gown, turns to the Virgin and places the crown on her head with his right hand. The Virgin dressed in a similar manner to Christ, faces him and presses her hands together in a gesture of supplication. The polychrome coloration consists of gold paint covering the garments of both figures. It is done in a rather crude way and indicates that the colour scheme is a post-medieval invention added in the first half of the nineteenth century.
