Cecily, known as Star, was the daughter of Francis Hamilton Wedgwood (1867-1930), the Chairman and Managing Director of the Wedgwood Etruria factory from 1916 until his death. Star, trained at Etruria under Alfred and Louise Powell and quickly graduated from a handpaintress to the position of designer. During her role, she created several patterns for Queen’s ware and bone china bodies. \r\n\r\nThe hand-painted decoration applied represents the influence of the Powells’ mentorship, and a preference for simple border designs which kept with Wedgwood tradition. Her later bone china designs showed more experimentation, with the use of ground colours and platinum. Star sometimes marked her work with a painted five-point star and the initials ‘CW’.","physicalDescription":"Round cream dinner plate decorated with dark pink and blue leaves and flowers and interlocking swag design in same colours around the rim, a hatched design also features within the swag","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Cecily Stella Wedgwood","id":"AUTH394292"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand painted","id":"x39976"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Queen's ware with hand-painted decoration","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2023NN8418"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES411782"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"plates","id":"AAT42991"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1936","earliest":"1936-01-01","latest":"1936-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
