Her practice is deeply connected to her personal experiences as a working class, queer woman of colour, and as a larger person. Drawing on performative and site specific techniques, Aguilar inserts her body into the landscape of America – an environment traditionally hostile to Latinx people and to queer communities.\r\n\r\nAguilar's photographs often feature self portraits of the artist nude and in the landscape; mostly the Texan desert. Positioning her body in a reverential environment of nature, Aguilar explores the physical and emotional ramifications of her large body and it’s relationship to pictorial traditions of the female nude, challenging the concept of beauty and femininity.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Laura Aguilar","id":"AUTH395551"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic paper","id":"AAT14190"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gelatin silver process","id":"AAT139114"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2023NP2256"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"X","shelf":"902","box":"C"}],"partTypes":[],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Texas","id":"x29815"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2000-2001","earliest":"2000-01-01","latest":"2001-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Acquired as part of The Parasol Foundation Women in Photography Project","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Laura Aguilar titled 'Center #71', 2000-2001","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.429:2-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"429","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-18","recordCreationDate":"2023-10-25","availableToBook":false}}
