The firm, founded in the 1780s and based at 14 Mount Street, London, originated as a partnership between George Elward and William Marsh. Edward Bailey joined the firm in 1793, followed by Thomas Tatham, brother of the designer Charles Heathcote Tatham, in 1798. Between 1803 and 1811 the firm traded as ‘Marsh and Tatham’ or ‘Tatham and Bailey’.
