It took his thousands of experiments over several years to perfect the material, which was versatile and could be coloured, cut and polished to great effect on his products. It could be coloured with a range of mineral oxide stains. \r\nOrnamenting, also known as sprigging, is the process of applying small reliefs to a ceramic body. The relief is pressed onto a moistened ceramic surface – a vase or plaque for example - then fired.","physicalDescription":"Vase, blue jasperware with white applied reliefs, ovoid shape vase, standing on square plinth; laurel wreath decorates the neck of the vase, an acanthus leaf band is applied around the shoulder, two handles in the form of scaled serpents are applied to the shoulder on both sides, serpents connecting underneath to a relief of Medusa, the main body ornamented with eight neo-classical reliefs depicting 'The Judgement of Paris', lower body decorated with foliate band; acanthus leaf band applied to foot, weave decoration on foot border; border plinth decorated with laurel wreath, held together by a rod, disk, and nut.","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"jasper ware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied reliefs","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"},{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2025PD7566"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA032.2","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"vases","id":"AAT132254"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1920","earliest":"1920-01-01","latest":"1920-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
