The portrait medallion is made from jasperware, a high-fired stoneware, which was invented by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It took his thousands of experiments over several years to perfect the material, which was versatile and could be coloured, cut and polished to great effect on his products. It could be coloured with a range of mineral oxide stains. The application of the applied reliefs is known as ornamenting or sprigging.","physicalDescription":"Portrait medallion of Thomas Byerley, blue jasperware with white applied relief in wooden frame; white relief of a man in side profile, facing left, wearing 19th century clothing; mounted in an oval gilded wooden frame with beaded border and glass panel.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"William Theed","id":"A8912"},"association":{"text":"Modeller","id":"AAT25417"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"jasper ware","id":"x30174"}],"techniques":[{"text":"relief","id":"AAT53622"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Jasperware with applied relief","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2024NX5091","2024NX5092"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"LC32.1","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"portrait medallions","id":"THES276079"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1810","earliest":"1810-01-01","latest":"1810-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
