The factory was opened by Josiah Wedgwood in 1769, on the 350-acre Ridgehouse Estate. It was constructed to produce ornamental and 'useful' wares. It was housed in three blocks, linked by walled yards, at the corners of which were eight 'hovels' containing ovens or kilns. There were wide gateways for the delivery of clay and removal of waste.
