In 2020, she published her first book, ‘Citizen First Designer Second’, a reflection on the value of design and its role in society. Her work has been displayed in exhibitions including ‘Can Graphic Design Save Your Life?’ Wellcome Collection (2015) and the Typojanchi Type Biennale, Seoul (2015).\r\nDel Ballo studied with Milton Glaser at the School of Visual Arts in New York and the St Joost Art Academy in Holland. While studying at art school she worked as a social worker. She has taught on MA and BA courses in art schools around Europe.\r\nIn 2014, she set up Studio Rejane Dal Bello (SRDB) and is particularly interested in how design can be harnessed to address society’s diverse needs, ‘to make something visible, worthy of time, attention and engagement’. As well as commercial clients, she works for non-profit organisations including a children’s hospital in Peru and Sesc Av Paulista, a Brazilian organisation that sees education as a vital part of social transformation and runs free training courses.\r\nDel Ballo’s corporate identity for Alzheimer Nederland was designed to stand out in the crowded charity sector and aims to articulate visually the characteristics of the disease. For example, the type is less clear at the centre of the letters because the hippocampus is one of the earliest areas of the brain affected. As Rejane explains, ‘I created this alphabet that sometimes you can read well but sometimes you can’t, because that’s how the disease progresses until you have no meaning in front of you anymore, just texture. I think that’s where designers can come in, to look at a difficult topic and to see that bridge between it and the world.’ This extensive sketchbook documents Dal Bello's design process and method in creating a visual identity, from initial ideas, iterations and development, to final refinement and its ultimate expression.
