La Na remained an independent kingdom until 1897 when it was taken over by Thailand.","physicalDescription":"The head of the Buddha is full and rounded, with drooping lotus-petal eyelids, semi-circular eyebrows that meet at the root of a sharply ridged aquiline nose, and a small mouth slightly upturned at the corners. The hair and ushnisha are formed by regular rows of snail-like curls. The whites of the eyes are inlaid with ivory or mother-of-pearl but the black pupils are missing, leaving two small cavities. This  sculpture was originally part of a colossal image, either seated or standing, from which it has broken away at the neck. The ears are damaged, and the ushnisha or flame of illumination is missing from the socket at the crown.
