In “Rookwood”, Harrison Ainsworth recounts the renowned spirited ride by Dick Turpin on Black Bess from London to York. / Born in 1705, the son of an alehouse keeper, Dick Turpin partnered the highwayman Tom King whom he later accidentally killed. / Under the assumed name of John Palmer, Dick set up as a horse dealer in Yorkshire.
