They were intended for the cheaper end of the market. At the time many critics and design reformers condemned pictorial patterns like this as evidence of bad taste and poor design. Wallpapers with commemorative designs would probably have been used in an inn, hotel or club rather than in an ordinary home.\r\n\r\nThis paper commemorates the Duke of Wellington's most famous military victories, including Vimiero, 1808, Talavera in 1809, Bussaco in 1810 and Waterloo in 1815. Wellington had died in 1852, so this was clearly produced in reponse to a mood of national mourning for one of Britain's greatest military leaders.","physicalDescription":"Portrait format wallpaper panel, depicting the Duke of Wellington and his victories, including Vimiero, 1808, Talavera in 1809, Bussaco in 1810 and Waterloo in 1815.\r\n\r\nThe Duke of Wellington and his Victories were depicted on this colour machine print wallpaper with great technical skill.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"x40240"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Heywood, Higginbottom & Smith","id":"A9120"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":"possibly"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[{"text":"machine printing","id":"x34901"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Colour machine print, paper","categories":[{"text":"Wall coverings","id":"THES48878"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2017JU1715"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC (VA)","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"MM","shelf":"11","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Wallpaper","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Manchester","id":"x28993"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1853-1855","earliest":"1848-01-01","latest":"1857-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Mr Reginald Guy Francis Hussey","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"65.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"43.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"38.5","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from:\r\n<u>Victoria & Albert Museum Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design & Department of Paintings Accessions 1934</u> London: Published under the Authority of the Board of Education, 1935","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wallpaper, printed by Heywood, Higginbottom and Smith, Manchester, c. 1853-1855.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"<u>Victoria & Albert Museum Department of Engraving, Illustration and Design & Department of Paintings Accessions 1934</u> London: Published under the Authority of the Board of Education, 1935 "}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Wellington (Duke of)","id":"N767"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"battles","id":"AAT185692"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.157-1934"],"accessionNumberNum":"157","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":1934,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-07","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-15","availableToBook":false}}
