Before discovering Dave Drake's work, Gates had felt like an 'anomaly'. Listening to gospel and hip hop in his studio as he worked, Gates struggled to find a connection to the American studio pottery artists that taught at his university. Over many years, he has dedicated exhibitions, songs and sculptures to Dave Drake.","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null}},{"text":"Label text for <b>Theaster Gates: Slight Intervention #5</b>, V&amp;A, 2021:\n\nVoulkos #1\n2021\r\n\r\nTheaster Gates made this work as an act of <i>utsushi</i>, which means replication as a spiritual practice in Japanese. This sculpture replaces <i>Pinatubo</i>, a large vessel created by American studio potter Peter Voulkos who trained Gates’steacher, Ingrid Lilligren.
