Although he is a multidisciplinary artist, Price is best known for his figurative sculpture, particularly his large-scale statues of seemingly everyday people. His work addresses questions of visibility, representation, identity, the politics and semantics of display, and race.\n \r\nPrice’s sculptures are often realistic heads and bodies that, at first glance, appear to be portraits of identifiable sitters. These works are in fact ‘imagined subjects’ or rather composites from individuals Price encounters in the streets of South London. He often uses bronze, as well as aluminium and acrylic, to create sculptures of ordinary contemporary Black men and, increasingly, women. Through his choice of material, placement on plinths and pedestals, and considerations of scale and monumentality, Price poses questions about status, subverting hierarchies of power and sculptural traditions.\n\r\nThe V&A’s collection was a key influence and source of inspiration for Price’s sculptural practice. He made numerous trips to the V&A, as both a child and a student at the Royal College of Art, which were formative experiences that prompted deep reflections about representation and the ways in which art is displayed. \n\r\nTasman Road, Figure 2 belongs to the Nude Series (2008), which were the first male figures made by Price. The works are named after streets in Brixton, where Price lived and worked. Street names often celebrate powerful white men of the past, like Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who the title of this work references. \n\r\nBy contrast, this bronze figure speaks not of dominance but instead carries a sense of vulnerability in his nudity, posture and small scale. He holds an old mobile phone in his left hand, prompting questions about from where and when in time he has appeared. Yet through his stoic expression and honesty, this ‘ordinary man’ quietly asserts his presence.
