The desk was acquired by the V&A in 2019 and is currently on display in the Design 1900 to Now gallery (W.10-2019). Its hyper-modern form was inspired by the possibilities of computer-aided design and manufacture. Even though it has the appearance of a machine-made object, a specialist boat builder crafted the desk’s sinuous shape by hand. \n\r\nFuture Systems was founded in 1979 by Jan Kaplicky and David Nixon. In 1989 Amanda Levete joined the practice from Richard Rogers & Partners. In the same year Future Systems designed the Newhouse desk they won the Stirling Prize for their design of the Lord's Cricket Ground media centre and received critical acclaim for the Selfridges building in Birmingham which subsequently opened in 2003.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Future Systems","id":"AUTH390755"},"association":{"text":"Designed","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"computer-aided design","id":"AAT54178"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Computer generated plans","categories":[{"text":"Furniture","id":"THES48948"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Interiors","id":"THES48933"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NP2807"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"KK","shelf":"27","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Designs","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1999","earliest":"1999-01-01","latest":"1999-12-31"},"association":{"text":"Designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"W.10-2019","id":"O1529428"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"Given by Jonathan Newhouse on behalf of Condé Nast International","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Desk design for Jonathan Newhouse by Future Systems, computer support/cover, 1999","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"desk (office furniture)","id":"x40613"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.1196-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"1196","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-19","recordCreationDate":"2023-06-07","availableToBook":false}}
