Angie and other members of the House of Xtravaganza (of which she was the head or ‘mother of the house’) were heavily featured in the 1990 documentary film Paris is Burning. The documentary has become a cultural touchstone of the late 20th century, depicting subcultural scenes of queer people of colour and the wide-ranging performance categories associated with ballroom events.","physicalDescription":"Archival pigment print depicting Angie Xtravaganza (1964-1993), co-founder and Mother of the House of Xtravaganza, from the series 'House Ball, Harlem, 1984'. She is pictured wearing a pink and black pleated gown, outside the venue in the morning at the end of the party.  Beside her is a large poster advertising WCBS-TV news picturing presenters Jim Jensen and Rolland Smith with graffiti. A man in a tight red vest, black shorts and sneakers walks past and glances across at Angie.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mariette Pathy Allen","id":"AUTH390798"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"photographic","id":"AAT14190"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"photography","id":"AAT54225"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"archival pigment print","categories":[{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"LGBTQ","id":"THES266921"},{"text":"Gender and Sexuality","id":"THES48940"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2024NT4893"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"B","id":"THES386309"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"photograph","id":"AAT46300"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1984","earliest":"1984-01-01","latest":"1984-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Presented by Art Fund","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"385","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2024","earliest":"2024-01-01","latest":"2024-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"580","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2024","earliest":"2024-01-01","latest":"2024-12-31"},"part":"image","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"407","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2024","earliest":"2024-01-01","latest":"2024-12-31"},"part":"sheet","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"607","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"2024","earliest":"2024-01-01","latest":"2024-12-31"},"part":"sheet","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed and numbered","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph (archival pigment print, signed and numbered) by Mariette Pathy Allen, USA.\r\n'Sunday Morning During a Drag Ball, 1984', (edition of 3).\r\n","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[{"text":"New York","id":"x29030"},{"text":"Harlem","id":"x30702"}],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[{"text":"transgender","id":"THES266901"},{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.435-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"435","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-08-11","recordCreationDate":"2023-06-02","availableToBook":false}}
