To mark this the Academy's President Adeline Genee gave the Academy a silver plaque, the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award, to be presented annually to an individual who had made a significant contribution to British ballet. The first recipient was Dame Ninette de Valois. It has been awarded to directors, choreographers, dancers, teachers, and, in 2003 to Princess Margaret for her support of ballet. The last recipient of the original plaque was Rudolf Nureyev who failed to return it at the end of the year, 1983, necessitating the making of anew one. The award is signed by Dame Antoinette Sibley who in 1991 became the third President of the RAD.
