The town is famed for its marble, used by artists for centuries, and remains to this day a thriving centre for sculpture. There, she perfected her knowledge of working with stone with both traditional and mechanical tools. \r\n\r\nThe red and black lines reveal Cassell’s working process, plotting the patterns’ structure onto the marble’s surface before carving into the stone. As the label for this object in the current exhibition, Halima Cassell: From the Earth at the Watts Gallery (to 18 June 2023) puts it, ‘for Cassell revealing the 3D sculpture from the 2D design is one of the most exciting moments in the process of making. In this sculpture, Cassell breaks up the pure white of the marble with hand drawn markings as if the carved pattern is emerging from her preparatory drawings’. \r\n\r\nThe piece evokes Cassell’s inspiration from architecture but also speaks of her fascination for the natural world. In its exquisite intricacy of lines and forms, Bow Wave is characteristic of the way in which her work plays with volume, light and patterns. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Carved from statuario marble, the title and design of this piece were inspired by the dramatic patterns that are formed in water as a boat ploughs through, creating ever dispersing rhythmic waves. The morphing from drawing to sculpture is exquisitely portrayed by Cassell, in the way in which the original marked and uncarved lines blend into the considered and intentional carved areas. The grid has first been mapped over the piece in pencil and then the design highlighted in red crayon before being overlaid with shellac (a resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees in the forests of India and Thailand). The purpose of the shellac is to seal the pencil and crayon and prevent smudging while the piece is being handled or carved into. A hammer and chisel, as well as pneumatic chiselling tools, have been used by Cassell to bring to life the patterns which she sees within the form, giving the viewer a deeper understanding into her mental and physical processes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Halima Cassell, MBE, FRSS","id":"C8477"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Carrara marble","id":"AAT11576"}],"techniques":[{"text":"Carving","id":"AAT53149"},{"text":"","id":""}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Carrara marble, red crayon, shellac","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[{"text":"contemporary","id":"x31258"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2023NN7798","2023NN7799","2023NN7800","2023NN7801","2023NN7802","2023NN7803","2023NN7804","2023NN7810","2023NN7813","2023NN7830","2023NN7831","2023NN7837"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"21","id":"THES49848"},"free":"","case":"WS","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sculpture","id":"AAT47090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2012","earliest":"2012-01-01","latest":"2012-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the support of the Robert H.
