","type":"assigned by artist"}],"summaryDescription":"Mari Mahr is a significant photographic artist, now in her early 80s. Born in Chile in 1941 to Hungarian parents, Mahr was brought up and educated between Santiago and in Budapest, Hungary, where her family returned to, having fled persecution during the Second World War. This diasporic and migratory lifestyle has produced a significant impact on Mahr’s life and photographic work. Originally trained as a photojournalist, her personal history would manifest in a freer, subtler artistic approach when she moved to London in 1972 and studied at the Polytechnic of Central London.\r\n\r\nMahr’s work is deeply autobiographical and yet addresses universal humanitarian themes such as migration, family, memory, politics, and place. In her distinctive practice, Mahr utilises everyday objects, items around her home and those collected during her extensive periods travelling, particularly from her childhood. These objects hold personal, historical, political or symbolic meaning, which are brought together in constructed, collaged scenes that connect with notions of dream and memory, and personal and collective thought.\n\nMahr notes: \n\n'Upon hearing that the internet was slowly making dictionaries redundant, I immediately returned to my favourite preoccupation - I gathered all the dictionaries in the house. Remembering how in one of my first series of photographs - decades ago - the choice of objects and situations were determined by diagrams randomly chosen from an early Larousse Encyclopaedia - a self-inflicted discipline - I now came to choose words…\r\n\r\nThe seemingly irrational, illogical choice of words, however, is by nature personal, creating a familiar landscape in which one can exist.'","physicalDescription":"Photograph","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mari Mahr","id":"A10299"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Archival pigment print","categories":[{"text":"Woman photographer","id":"THES380381"},{"text":"Photographs","id":"THES48910"},{"text":"Woman Artist","id":"THES387590"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"DOP","id":"THES291628"},"images":["2024NT2805","2024NT8761"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLF","id":"THES49656"},"free":"","case":"DR53","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2017","earliest":"2017-01-01","latest":"2017-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"PH.216-2023","id":"O1751415"},"association":"Set"},{"object":{"text":"PH.217-2023","id":"O1751416"},"association":"Set"}],"creditLine":"Donated by Mari Mahr","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"93","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Photograph by Mari Mahr from the series 'Words, words, words...', 2017\n","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["PH.218-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"218","accessionNumberPrefix":"PH","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[{"type":{"text":"series number","id":"THES57536"},"number":"3"}],"copyNumber":"A/P","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-09","recordCreationDate":"2023-04-03","availableToBook":false}}
