Long known for her monochromatic work in either gold or silver, Saito introduced subtly-coloured hardstones in some of her designs after a training in carving stone which was funded by an award from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust in 2016.  \n\r\nThis brooch does not aim to represent a particular plant or tree, rather the sense of young leaves and Spring growth. Drawn to the colour and opacity of individual stones rather than seeking particularly precious examples of a mineral, she has carved each petal from a different piece to give a gradation of colour. As with her gold and silver, she has avoided brightly polished surfaces, creating an effect of softness and intensity. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Vertical brooch with five gold leaves and five jade petals arranged in an undulating line, appearing to grow from a stylized gold branch behind. Each petal is supported by a gold disc at the back and by a gold pin that passes from the back of the leaf through the jade. The straight branch is hollow and of semicircular section with a double pin along its length. The gold has a soft matt texture with subtle veining. The brooch's rectangular case is of unvarnished wood, with kayo saito (all lower case) burnt onto the inside of the lid and with a ribbed braid tie of dark purple cotton.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kayo Saito","id":"AUTH388993"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Gold","id":"AAT10973"},{"text":"jade","id":"AAT11119"},{"text":"","id":""}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Hand-beaten eighteen carat gold and hand-carved jade","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2024NV9699","2024NV9700","2024NV7465","2024NV7468"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES404560"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES404560"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Brooch","id":"THES287566"}],[{"text":"Case","id":"THES251008"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2023","earliest":"2023-01-01","latest":"2023-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"70","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"30","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"19","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Maker's mark KS and London hallmarks for 18 carat gold.","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Brooch 'Spring', of gold and jade, designed and made by Kayo Saito,  England 2023, with rectangular wooden case.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Unique","id":"THES48864"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.58:1-2023","M.58:2-2023"],"accessionNumberNum":"58","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2023,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-09-17","recordCreationDate":"2023-03-20","availableToBook":false}}
