Barbier was a key exponent of the late 18th-century French revival style that flourished in the graphic and decorative arts of the 1920s-1930s. In addition to the now highly sought-after fashion plates he designed for the Gazette du Bon Ton, he also produced illustrations for a number of high-end books which were either derived from 18th-century texts or inspired by the period. \nBarbier’s mildly erotic illustrations for Les Liaisons Dangereuses combine late 18th-century French sources (portraits and genre paintings of Marie-Antoinette's court; elements lifted directly from Moreau le Jeune’s Monument du costume and the Gallerie [sic] des Modes et Costumes Français) with the exquisite palette and hand-coloured stencilling technique of Art Deco illustration. \nThis edition of Les Liaisons Dangereuses is considered a masterpiece of book illustration and manages to evoke both the decadence and glamour of the doomed ancien régime and the heady sophistication of the roaring twenties.
