The portrait was originally modelled as the companion to one of Mrs. Flaxman between 1787-94. John Flaxman Jnr was born in York in 1755, the son of the modeller and and plaster cast maker, John Flaxman Snr. Due to ill health, he spent most of his youth in his father’s workshop at New Street, Covent Garden to where the family had moved. At the age of 12, he won a first prize from the Society of Arts for a medal, and was soon afterwards enrolled at the Academy School, where he first exhibited in 1770. Flaxman came to Wedgwood's notice about 1771. Wedgwood wrote to Bentley, 7 September 1771, concerning the visit to Etruria of Mr. Freeman. He comments that: ‘He is a great admirer of young Flaxman, and has advised his father to send him to Rome... Mr Freeman says he knows young Flaxman is a coxcomb, but does not think him a bit the worse for it, or the less likely to be a great artist. (ms:L.H.P). Flaxman established his own business in 1782 and lived, with his new wife Ann Denman, in Wardour Street. Three years later he travelled to Rome, where he stayed for seven years supervising Wedgwood’s team of modellers established there to supply the increasing demand for classical designs. he returned to England in 1794, devoting himself largely to monumental sculpture. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1800. He died at his home in Buckingham Street. Fitzroy Square, London, in 1826.","physicalDescription":"Portrait medallion, green jasperware with white relief, mounted in wooden frame; circular shape, green jasperware body, front decorated with applied relief depicting a side profile of John Flaxman Jr, facing left, mounted in circular wooden frame.
