Skellern had studied at Burslem School of Art and in 1930 took up a scholarship at the Royal College of Art. He returned to Wedgwood in 1934, and went on to engage many freelance artists to produce new designs and patterns, including Edward Bawden (1903–1989), Clare Leighton (1898–1989), Eric Ravilious (1903–1942; 85–8), Laura Knight (1877–1970) and Rex Whistler (1905–1944). Skellern’s own designs included the patterns ‘Wild Oats’ and ‘Persian Ponies’, and black-basalt and jasper vase shapes.","physicalDescription":"Teacup and saucer, bone china with transfer printed and enamel decoration; cylindrical shape cup with loop handle, concave and circular shape saucer exterior, both parts decorated with with black transfer printed decoration of horses and groups of waved lines, embellished with red enamel.
