Having joined Wedgwood in 1917, she set up the ‘hand crafts’ studio in 1926; it merged with the hand-painting department a year later, and she began to design her own free-flowing, naturalistic patterns in 1928. Taplin taught later at Stoke School of Art and Burslem School of Art, and frequently collaborated with Victor Skellern on projects from the introduction of lithographic printing, which enabled Wedgwood to reproduce colourful and complex designs and remains in use today, to the creation of new designs. Most notable of these was ‘Strawberry Hill’, which received a Design of the Year Award from the Council of Industrial Design in 1957.","physicalDescription":"Bowl, Queen's ware with hand painted lustre and enamel decoration; deep, circular bowl with moulded scalloped edge, cream colour body, upper body of interior and exterior with repeating hand painted silver lustre and green and blue enamel decoration depicting flowers, leaves, vines and leaves.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Millicent Taplin","id":"A20529"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"x33306"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand-painted","id":"x39976"},{"text":"lustre","id":"x29344"},{"text":"enamelling","id":"x37485"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Queen's ware with hand painted lustre and enamel","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2022NC5528","2022NC5529","2022NC5530"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"bowl","id":"AAT203596"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1922","earliest":"1922-01-01","latest":"1922-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
