Alfred had originally trained as an architect, and Louise as a calligrapher, and these disciplines informed their pottery designs. Inspired by Wedgwood’s early pattern books, around 1906 the Powells established a school of freehand ‘Paintresses’, creating new ranges of hand-painted ceramic designs. Wedgwood also supplied undecorated pieces for the Powells to decorate in their London studio. Many of Wedgwood’s most distinctive ceramics from this period bear Alfred’s or Louise’s monogram.","physicalDescription":"Plaque, Queen's ware with hand painted decoration; circular plaque with concave centre, centre decorated with a hand painted scene depicting a woodland landscape, with a white deer galloping through, and white and grey rabbits beneath the undergrowth; the deer motif is continued on the underside of the plaque.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Alfred Powell","id":"A22841"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Josiah Wedgwood and Sons","id":"A1450"},"association":{"text":"manufacturers","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[{"text":"hand-painted","id":"x39976"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Queen's ware with hand painted decoration","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2022NC5515","2022NC5516","2022NC5519","2022NC5518","2022NC5517"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"SHLN","id":"THES49063"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"plaque","id":"AAT10262"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Etruria","id":"x33200"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1920","earliest":"1915-01-01","latest":"1924-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
