Using bone china and black basalt, Barton’s sculptures combined the precision of factory techniques, from transfer-printing to casting, with refined, modern forms. Her ethereal designs, whose ‘subject is always humanity’, explore the human form through the recurring motifs of figures, silhouettes, heads and hands, prefiguring more recent sculptural trends.","physicalDescription":"Round plaque, bone china, with 20 male figures arranged around a central circular space. Some of the figures are composed of lithograph patterns, fading in colour from black to very light grey. This is followed by six figures in relief, which unlike the rest of the piece are unglazed.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Barton, Glenys","id":"A2634"},"association":{"text":"Artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bone china","id":"AAT233473"}],"techniques":[{"text":"lithograph","id":"x39981"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"bone china with applied lithographs and relief figures","categories":[{"text":"V&A Wedgwood Collection","id":"THES276060"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"WED","id":"THES270009"},"images":["2022NC5287","2022NC5290","2022NC5288","2022NC5289"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"WDG2","id":"THES292798"},"free":"","case":"CA58","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"sculptures","id":"AAT47090"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Barlaston","id":"x31989"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1976","earliest":"1976-01-01","latest":"1976-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"V&A Wedgwood Collection.
