The theme was 'The Age of Discovery' and the event coincided with the 500th anniversary of Columbus first setting sail from Andalusia to the Americas in 1492.  An enormous section of the city was transformed with modern pavilions, cable cars, and a monorail, much of which was designed to be temporary. The cost of the fair ran into several billion dollars causing financial controversy as the overly large site remained semi-derelict for many years.
