During this time there was a revival in the taste for black Chantilly-style lace, like this piece, which had seen its greatest period of popularity in the 1850s and 1860s.\r\n \r\nThis silk bobbin lace fan mount is part of Lady Harcourt's trousseau ordered from the leading fashion house Worth of Paris for her wedding on 1 July, 1899. Other matching lace in the set included a pair of flounces and a handkerchief. The lace was made for Worth by the manufacturer Georges Robert of Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy. Lady Harcourt seems to have had a particular liking for irises, as she had a fine Burano needle lace stole of the same date, also given to the museum, with this same beautiful flower as the dominant motif.","physicalDescription":"Lace fan-leaf","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Robert, Georges","id":"A11753"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Worth, Charles Frederick","id":"A2554"},"association":{"text":"retailer","id":"AAT25246"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk","id":"AAT14072"},{"text":"bobbin lace","id":"AAT132869"}],"techniques":[{"text":"bobbin lace making","id":"x30355"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Silk bobbin lace","categories":[{"text":"Accessories","id":"THES48998"},{"text":"Lace","id":"THES48926"},{"text":"Fans","id":"THES253017"},{"text":"Europeana Fashion Project","id":"THES265804"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2006BB9247","2006AC7186","2012FR8429","2018LC8986","2018LC8987","2018LC8988","2018LC8990"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404980"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Fan mount","id":""}],[{"text":"Flounce","id":""}],[{"text":"Handkerchief","id":""}],[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Box","id":""}],[{"text":"Border","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Normandy","id":"x29041"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1899","earliest":"1899-01-01","latest":"1899-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given from the collection of Mary, Viscountess Harcourt GBE","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"66","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"20","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"at centre","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"RF number is 1961/1867.\r\n\r\nThe fan leaf was displayed in the \"Textile Art of France\" exhibition in 1979.\r\n\r\nPart of Lady Harcourt's trousseau ordered from Worth of Paris for her wedding on 1 July 1899.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"blace silk bobbin lace fan leaf with design of irises, French, 1899","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.30-1965","T.30A-1965","T.30C-1965","T.30D-1965","T.30E-1965","T.30F-1965","T.30B-1965"],"accessionNumberNum":"30","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":1965,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE","Fan mount","Flounce","Handkerchief","Box [1]","Box [2]","Box [3]"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-19","recordCreationDate":"1999-12-15","availableToBook":false}}
