As tea was a very expensive and highly sought after commodity since the seventeenth century, tableware for tea was like an empty canvas for the most delicate and imaginative designs in pottery. Josiah Wedgwood had many interests - but conchology, or shell-collecting, really fired his imagination. His close observations of these natural forms directly inspired him, and later generations, to produce shapes and surface decoration inspired by what he called these '...beautiful mansions.' \nThe spoon is made of Jasperware. Jasperware, a high-fired stoneware, was invented by Josiah Wedgwood in the 1770s. It took his thousands of experiments over several years to perfect the material, which was versatile and could be coloured, cut and polished to great effect on his products.
