He operated a portrait and commercial photography studio in London and worked as a staff photographer for publications including the Daily Mirror and Picture Post magazine. From 1937 to 1938, Spender was the photographer for the Mass Observation Project, an independent body aiming to record the reality of daily life in Britain. His most famous photographs are of the ‘Worktown Study’. ‘Worktown’ was the Mass Observationist's codename for Bolton. Spender photographed the factories and the residents of the town. \r\nThis photograph was given to Susan Bennett by Spender after her request to him to reprint his original negatives from the Worktown series which incidentally showed ceramic chimney pots. Bennett is a ceramicist, gardener and collector of chimney pots who wanted to obtain some documentary photographs of the pots in situ for an exhibition which she and her ceramicist husband Early Hyde organised, The North Country Chimney Pot Show, at Barnett Borough Arts Council Library, 12-26 April 1980. Spender’s photographs were shown alongside the chimney pots.
