A particularly stylish version was the ‘pierrot’ [sparrow], worn between 1785 and 1795, and characterised by the short skirts at the back resembling a sparrow’s tail, as illustrated in fashion plates, such as Journal de la Mode et du Gout, February 1790. This example is an even more chic version of the pierrot, with a standing, a cape (wide falling collar) and very wide revers (lapels). These masculine features were typical of Anglomania, a rare moment (c.1780-1792) when British fashions, and particularly tailoring, influenced French style. Very high collars and wide revers were worn by fashionable young Frenchmen and this pierrot echoes the striped silk coat worn by Maximilien Robbespierre, c.1790, in a portrait by an unknown artist in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris.","physicalDescription":"Woman’s jacket of blue silk taffeta with narrow stripes of green, black and yellow. It has a 2 ½ inch (6.4 cm) high turn-down collar, a wide cape and revers. The curving, 2-piece sleeves are long and narrow ending in 4-inch (10 cm) cuffs at the wrist. The jacket opens at the centre front and ends in a curve below the waistline. Each front is cut in two pieces diagonally extending around the sides to the back, where there are two narrow pieces at centre back extending into short pleated ‘tails’ below the back waist. The sleeves are lined with cream silk twill, the back with linen and the fronts with cream, yellow, pink and lilac chiné silk. The collar, cape, revers, cuffs, hem and upper front are trimmed with pink, yellow and green silk fringe. There are two 1⅜- wide buttons on each cuff with corresponding buttonholes and five buttons on the right front. There are no corresponding buttonholes, so the jacket must have pinned to close.
